AN internal investigation is ongoing into the appointment of a Detective Sergeant at Letterkenny Garda Station, the Donegal News has confirmed.
The investigation follows a complaint made by two Garda members after the appointment of a Detective Sergeant in the station two years ago.
The Mayo native was promoted from the rank of Sergeant to Detective Sergeant by the Inspector and his appointment was approved by the Garda commissioner, Noel Conroy.
Two serving sergeants in the Donegal division at the time were upset they were not considered for the position. One of the Garda sergeants has called in an outside agency to investigate the matter, believing the promotion to be 'unfair and biased'. The two members who were also hoping for promotion were in a more senior position and had more years experience in the force. The investigation began three weeks ago into the selection process used.
Garda sources say the promotion is unlikely to be reversed at this stage, however if the external agency finds grounds that the promotion was unjust, both members have recourse for a civil action against An Garda Síochána.
