THE Administrator of St Eunan's Cathedral in Letterkenny has this week appealed to people stop dumping household waste in the town's graveyards.
Speaking to the Donegal News on Tuesday Fr Eamon Kelly said graveyard skips were being used on a regular basis for dumping household waste in what he described as a 'very disrespectful practice'. Fr Kelly said there was an ongoing problem in graveyards at Conwal and Leck. This week he appealed to people involved to refrain from such activity.
"The graveyards are sacred and holy places and skips are provided for any waste such as flowers, grass or old wreaths. Unfortunately some people are using the skips for dumping household waste and this is very disrespectful," he said.
"I'd appeal to people to stop this immediately so we can leave the graveyards looking as good as we can," he added.
DISRESPECTFUL
Fr Kelly said dumping household waste into graveyard skips was happening on a regular basis.
"It is very disrespectful to the dead to take household waste where we have laid our loves one to rest. I know people make great efforts to keep the graveyards so well and if household waste is dumped in skips and overflowing it is very unsightly," he said.
Fr Kelly's appeal comes just a week ahead of the annual blessing of the graves in Letterkenny. They begin on Sunday, July 15 at 4 pm in Conwal. The blessing in Aughaninshin will take place on Monday, July 16 at 7 pm.
On Sunday, July 22, the blessing of Old Leck graveyard takes place at 4pm followed at 5 pm in New Leck.
