LOCAL Councillors have agreed to make funding available for upgrading a sewer line in Glenwood Park area of Letterkenny to prevent future flooding of effluent waste onto the street.
Making the proposal at the monthly meeting of Letterkenny Town Council, Councillor Gerry McMonagle said the matter had been raised before.
"I talked with the Town Engineer, Michael McFadden recently and we've tried to identify what's causing the problem," he said, adding that the estate was built over 20 years ago.
Cllr McMonagle explained that the storm water was running into the foul water and this was then coming up through the manholes.
"This is a health hazard," Clr Monagle declared.
"This is a Town Council estate and it's very well run - there's a lot of good work being done by the residents' association and they are at their wits end. It was raised back in April and it needs a complete new line," he added.
Pointing out that every two or three weeks effluent was flooding onto the street and into backyards, Cllr McMonagle asked that the Council make money available in the estimates this year to solve the problem.
Seconding he motion, Cllr Dessie Larkin said he had visited the estate with the Town Engineer. Noting that the problem was ongoing, Cllr Larkin said that he knew negotiations had been opened up with a view to securing adjoining land in an effort to sort the difficulties.
"Every time the bad weather comes people are expected to be flooded," he said.
Agreeing with his council colleagues, Town Mayor, Cllr Ciaran Brogan asked that the issue be tackled "once and for all."
