WORK is due to begin within the next month on the construction of a new 20 acre Town Park in the Ballymacool area of Letterkenny.
Letterkenny Town Council has agreed a funding package of ¤3.75 million. Speaking to the Donegal News on Tuesday, Town Clerk, Mr Paddy Doherty said he was hopeful work would start within the next month.
The contractor is RJ McKelvey from Co Tyrone and the tender was for ¤3. 34 million but along with fees the total cost of the project is ¤3.75 million. The park will be double the size of the existing park at Kilmacrennan Road. It will include features such as a multi- youth games area, play area along with various walk routes. This will include a link from the town through the park to Conwal.
"Members gave the green light for the funding package on Monday night and it is now all systems go for the development of the park," Mr Doherty said.
"This will be a major boost for Letterkenny and will provide a much needed amenity for this growing part of the town," he added.
Funding will come from the sale of existing council assets (¤1million) along with ¤600,000 from the Development Contribution Scheme and the balance from the councils own resources and state grants.
The old reservoir site at Glencar has been sold to facilitate this development.
