A SURGE in sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in Donegal is to be tackled with the provision of a new clinic in Letterkenny.
Over recent years there has been a dramatic rise in the number of cases, which is causing particular concern for health professionals.
In light of this, the problem is now to be targeted with part of a ¤30 million EU funding package which will see a new GUM (genito urinary medicine) clinic in Letterkenny, to help tackle the extra demand for services.
The HSE's Public Health Department have confirmed that there has been a significant increase in the number of STIs in Donegal and the North West. In 2006 there were 480 cases, rising to 627 in 2007. Statistics for 2008 are still being processed by the Department.
Eleven sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are currently legally notifiable in Ireland.
It was confirmed recently that the 'EU's INTERREG IVA' programme for cross-border health and social care services is funding twelve projects in border areas until 2013, including the provision of extra GUM clinics.
