Donegal also suspend two players over indiscipline

BY CHRIS MCNULTY

IN THE wake of the latest tale of indiscipline within the Donegal Senior Football team, the Donegal News has learned that the Glenswilly GAA club have suspended players Ciaran Bonner and Colin Kelly for the remainder of the year.

Bonner, along with former Donegal captain and Glenswilly team-mate Neil Gallagher, were this week dropped from the Donegal squad for a breach of discipline just days before the county's opening All Ireland qualifier against Carlow tomorrow evening.

Donegal manager John Joe Doherty was making no comment on the matter other than to confirm that the players were 'gone from the squad' due to 'indiscipline' and that it was 'time to move on with the players who remain in the fold'.

The two players were informed by Doherty of his decision to omit them from his plans for the remainder of the summer on Tuesday afternoon and they were not in attendance at training later that evening in Ballybofey.

In a further twist to the matter, it has emerged that the Glenswilly club, of which both players are key members, have supported Doherty's disciplinary action and the club called a meeting to discuss the issue on Wednesday night.

"I have absolutely no comment to make on it whatsoever," club secretary Joe Kelly told the Donegal News yesterday morning when contacted. However, sources have confirmed

that Bonner and former County player Colin Kelly have been suspended by the Pairc Naomh Columba club for the rest of the current campaign. At the time of going to press it could not be confirmed if Gallagher faces the wrath of his club. However, it appears he may escape punishment by his club.

It is believed that the meeting was called to address disciplinary issues within the club and it comes during a week when the GAA in the county has been plunged into controversy once again.

Gallagher, who captained Donegal to National League success in 2007, was doubtful anyway for tomorrow evening's game with Carlow having picked up a hamstring injury while playing for his club recently, but Bonner would almost have been a certain starter for the clash. The talented forward only just returned to the set-up for the recent Ulster Championship defeat to Antrim after leaving the panel when he was dropped for playing in a club challenge game two days before Donegal's League game away to Galway.

At the time, Doherty held a meeting with Bonner at which a number of senior players were in attendance and the parties expressed satisfaction with the commitment given.

"We are happy with the commitment Ciaran has given. Sometimes when you give a man a lift when he is down it can have a positive effect," was Doherty's response after Bonner returned to the county jersey. That was just eight weeks ago and the manager had the cut of a severely let-down man when he spoke briefly about the matter on Wednesday night.

This latest disciplinary debacle has rocked Donegal, as they set about repairing the damage caused by their shock reversal to Antrim.

Doherty confirmed that he had no plans to draft any replacements into the set-up.

"I have no-one in mind to be honest. I am working off a panel of 30 now at the minute and really we can't look past Saturday. We can't say that cames will come hot and heavy, for obvious reasons, but if we win on Saturday then we'll be out again the following week and the schedule is like that for the Qualifiers so there isn't much time between games." he said.
