A FINN Valley woman who suffers from a restricted growth condition is encouraging Donegal people with the same condition to help her raise awareness. Catherine Slevin from Liscooley is Chairperson of the Little People of Ireland, and says only four of the sixteen Donegal families affected by restricted growth attended the Annual Convention this year.
Catherine, her brother Charles and nine year-old daughter Michelle all suffer from a condition known as pseudoachondroplasia. "It was because of Michelle I went," says Catherine, "I have met so many people through this convention and got so much information on education, transport, entitlements, adaptations and medical concerns".
OTHER INDIVIDUALS
She urges other individuals and families affected by the condition to come forward and help to promote an awareness and understanding of it. She says that the Athlone-based convention had a strong social aspect and was glad that her and Michelle met other people who shared the same challenges. "People who need support and information shuld make an effort to come to the convention", she added.
The Little People of Ireland promotes awareness of the various conditions which lead to restricted growth. Formerly known as the Irish Association for Restricted Growth, it aims to support and assist individuals and families affected by the condition.
