THE first step to secure a network speed cameras focusing on high risk zones in Donegal is underway. At the weekend, Gardai published an information document for private companies that may be interested in applying for the camera contract. This is seen as the first move as part of biggest drive against road death in the country.
Donegal will have the highest number of fixed speed cameras in the country, with forty five roads being targeted as the most dangerous where the cameras will be positioned. The list of red zone speed traps in Donegal where cameras will be placed include: Junction at Ballyboe (Falcarragh), Junction at Meenagcarry (Darney), Letterkenny (Ballykeeran Junction), Inver Village, Creeslough Town Boundary, Dromore Lower at Donegal Town By Pass, Ballyshannon, Ballybofey (Carnamaddy), Bonagee Roundabout, Moneyhaughly Junction, Letterkenny side of Whitecross, Castlefin, Bundoran, Ballynacarrick, Barnesmore Gap, Raphoe, Carrigans, Kildrum, Bridgend, Fahan, Dore, Clonmany, Redcastle and Glentogher,
It is estimated that the number of nationwide locations to get speed cameras will be between 500 and 1,000. Although the service is being privatised, it will operate under the control of senior gardai who will determine where the cameras should be located. A request for tenders for the contractw ill be published shorty in the eurpoean Union journal nad it is expected to be some time before the repsponses have been evaluated.
