THE Mayor of Donegal, Enda Bonner has called on Donegal County Council to undertake an urgent review of bridges across the county.
Speaking at this week's monthly meeting of the Council, Mr Bonner stated: "There are many bridges in the county which are potential death traps unless something is done about them."
Cllr Bonner made particular reference to the lucky escape of a Council lorry-driver in South Donegal two weeks ago when the bridge gave way underneath him. "This man was very fortunate the cab of the lorry didn't go down first or else the consequences could have been tragic."
"There are basic bridges on a number of roads in the county which people can't see because they are so overgrown."
With particular reference to the Glenties Electoral Area, Cllr Bonner stated:
"There are a series of three bridges on the far side of Meenaroy heading from Letterkenny toward Dungloe and Glenties. Someone is going to be killed on these; they are like sandcastles."
Cllr Bonner made a plea for special funding to be allocated to the repair of bridges across the county. He concluded: "A general proper look needs to be taken at these bridges. It's not a major job to maintain the majority of them."
