Sinn Féin Councillor Gerry McMonagle has welcomed a new lighting scheme around the '8 Acres' green area in Glencar.
Cllr McMonagle said he was responsible for proposing the scheme through motion to Letterkenny Town Council in autumn 2006.
Cllr McMonagle said: "Sinn Féin introduced this motion calling for improved lighting around the green in Glencar after persistent complaints from residents about anti-social activity. This included under-age groups congregating and drinking, as well as cars being rallied across the green.
"It had got to the stage where many residents were actually apprehensive about using the footpaths through the green which connect houses with the local shopping centre. That was an unacceptable situation.
SAFER
"I am pleased that the improved lighting has been put in place by the Town Engineer this week. This is a welcome development which will hopefully go some way towards making everyone feel safer when using this area.
"Sinn Féin would now call on everyone to desist from causing damage or vandalism to the new lighting, and respect the right of people to safe passage through this area."
