IN recognition of her forty years in the entertainment business singer Margo will be honoured as the 2006 Donegal Person of the Year at a gala function in the Burlington Hotel, Dublin tomorrow (Saturday) night.
Well over 1,000 tickets have been sold for the event where Margo will be joined by family, friends and supporters from all over the country. She was selected in January by the Donegal Association in Dublin.
Margo said she was 'over the moon' and described the accolade as the biggest achievement of her career.
"The award is so special because it is from the people of Donegal, my home. I have received lots of awards but this event past me by until now. When I got the news I was speechless. If you make it at home, you're made. The Donegal people have been behind me since I first took to the stage at 13 with the Keynotes. Maybe to other people it is not a big award but I feel like I'm ten feet tall," she said.
DEDICATE TO LATE FATHER
Margo will dedicate the award to her late father Francis.
"My father died when he was just 48, he was a Donegal man through and through, and I'm dedicating the award to him," she added.
Margo has played at the top venues in the world such as the Carnegie Hall (New York), Grand Old Oprey, Royal Albert Hall and Nashville described this accolade as the crowning moment of her career.
The Chairman of the Donegal Association, Mr Martin McGettigan, said the award was a huge recognition of her contribution to the music industry over forty years.
"Margo was at her peak in the late 60's when people flocked to her concerts in Europe and America when their only contact with home was meeting entertainers like her. Margo struck up a great repport with the emigrants. Margo is also a symbol of how people can come through difficult times," he said.
"We're delighted to honour her with this award and she follows in the footsteps of her brother Daniel who won the award in the early 90s. It is the first time a sister and brother have won the award and we're expecting a huge crowd," Mr McGettigan said.
