Ballyshannon based charity "Community Creations," which runs the award-winning Spunout.ie website, are moving their headquarters to Galway City.
"We're fairly well established in Donegal now and have a wide network of supporters and volunteers that will carry on much of our work in the North West. We'll also be hiring a part-time project worker in Donegal to roll-out our suicide prevention and awareness campaign so we're not leaving Donegal completely," said co-founder Ruairí McKiernan.
The group, set up by McKiernan and Keith Corcoran three years ago, will continue to operate in Donegal but took the decision to move as part of their continued growth. Spunout.ie is a national website that deals with youth, health and community issues. The team, which now also includes Anna Lally, have promised further development of the site.
In addition to running the website, the group have organised exhibitions for young artists, given media training to Asylum Seeker and Traveller groups, and designed numerous community websites. They have also provided consultancy services to organisations including the HSE and World Health Organisation and worked extensively with, and for, the people of South Donegal.
Despite their achievements, it took a lot of work to get to where they are now. Mr McKiernan urged politicians to be more "proactive" in providing much needed support for similar regional, youth-led initiatives. .
" Community and youth groups throughout the North West are providing vital social services but continue to struggle for basic funds and support. It's time that they received widespread praise and significant financial support for their work in addressing social problems."
