DONEGAL beef farmers have this week received a serious blow with cattle prices falling to the lowest they have been in a considerable time.
The IFA's National and County Livestock Chairman, Mr George O'Hagan said:"Moves by the meat factories to cut cattle prices were totally unjustified and a very negative blow to winter finishers."
"Most cattle being killed this week are on last week's prices of x3.00/Kg (107 p/lb) for R grades and x2.88/Kg (103p/lb) for O grades. However a number of factories were quoting x2.94-x2.97/Kg (105-106 p/lb) for R grades and x 2.83-x2.86/Kg (101-102 p/lb) for O grades." The IFA has called a meeting of winter finishers for next Monday night, 12 March, at 8.30 p.m. in the Montague Hotel, Emo, County Laois.
