ANGRY residents in the Glencar area of Letterkenny have warned they will 'fight all the way' plans to build 28 apartments in the heart of an old residential area in the town.
A public meeting will take place tonight (Monday) to discuss the controversial development but already residents have voiced strong opposition to the plan and warned they will be formally lodging an objection to the proposal by a Stephen McCauley. The property which was formerly known as 'The Wilderness' until it was sold recently is located at the corner of Lower College Farm Road.
The developer has applied to Letterkenny Town Council for planning permission to build 28 apartments- eight in the basement, 10 on the first floor, 9 on the second and one in the third. The plan also includes space for an office and car parking in the basement.
Speaking to the Donegal News one irate resident said people in the Wolfe Tone Place, College Farm Road and Glencar Road areas were 'very annoyed' and totally opposed to the plan
"The location of these apartments is on one of the busiest roads in the town. You have buses and school traffic every day going to St Eunan's College, Loreto Convent, the two nearby local national schools and St Bernadette's Special School. The junction is already choc-a-bloc with traffic but to add more vehicles coming out of this proposed development would be a nightmare," the resident said.
"We have gathered a petition in the area and we will be lodging an objection on a number of grounds not least the fact that this development is not conducive to a quiet residential area. We're meeting tonight to help finalise our case for the objection. People are very annoyed by this plan and feel strongly that it should be opposed," he added.
The news comes as residents in the Beechwood Road area firm up their opposition to plans for 19 apartments in their area on the site of the former Hill Bungalow at the junction of Beechwood Road-New Line Road.
