DONEGAL will welcome home its world record braking speed skater this weekend.

A gala reception will be held in the Cross, Killygordon on Sunday evening for local woman Clare Scanlon who came second in the World Masters Speed Skating Championships in Canada.

Clare was competing for Holland at the Championships in Calgary two weeks ago finishing just behind favourite Nina Bjornbeth of Norway and managed to smash a six year old 1,500 metre world record by more than eight seconds.

Clare was the first ever Irish person to take part in the Championships, which were held in the Olympic Oval.

The celebrations will start at 4pm and a host of dignitaries and local sports personalities will be in attendance.

Everyone is welcome to come along and enjoy an evening of music and craic.
