Saturday night brought a treat for music lovers when Soul Jazz brought their 100% Dynamite show to the Fubar, in Letterkenny. Guest DJ on the night was Pete Reilly while MC Ox provided the vocals. In the fine tradition of Jamaican sound system parties, this combo worked the crowd with a combination of Reilly's thumping tunes and MC Ox's strong vocal delivery.
The live MC added an interactive vibe to the night and gave it a more organic feel than a straight DJing set. Ox maintained a steady, powerful output and kept the crowd going while Reilly's musical selections were suitably evocative. The music tapped into a rich vein of reggae and dancehall but he also slipped a few soul rarities seamlessly into the mix. Upbeat bass-heavy tunes soon got everyone moving.
There was a large turn-out and as the night went on the dance floor quickly became a mass of bodies. There were plenty of the usual suspects but the mixed crowd reflected the good word that had spread before the gig. Not to mention the wide popularity of this genre of music.
When the music stopped, a feet stomping demand for more led to a conference amongst the powers that be and the bouncers duly allowed an extra song as an encore. The noisy response was a testament to the quality of the music on the night. The ebullient crowd would quite happily have stayed on for more but sadly were given just one reggae reprise.
As a follow up to Soul Jazz's Jerry Dammers gig in the same venue, their visits are fast acquiring a reputation as being worth seeing. It was encouraging to see the night get a good response as it bodes well for future visits.
