DONEGAL Pet Rescue this week endorsed a call to have micro-chipping of dogs in the county made compulsory.
THE farmers' organisation ISCA have called for the micro-chip to be inserted in dogs which so their owners can be easily identified. The call comes after several attacks on children which were well documented in the national media.
Micro chipping would serve a number of useful purposes such as the monitoring of dangerous breeds by the statutory authorities and a method of identifying lost, stolen and abandoned dogs.
According to PRO of Donegal Pet Rescue Mr Sean McClafferty micro-chipping would serve as a useful tool to ensure that dog owners would take responsibility for their animals.
"There is no doubt that legislation is on the way and if the government introduce mandatory micro-chipping, funding should be made available.
"Donegal Pet Rescue as an organisation is very much in favour of such a measure if it is controlled in the correct manner. We hope to produce an information leaflet in due course to inform the public of the benefits of such a scheme'' he said.
