A former pupil of St Eunan's College, Letterkenny, he worked for a time with Donegal County Council after leaving school before he went to London where he worked in a clerical capacity for London Transport.

From a well known family Mr Gallagher is survived by two brothers, Fr Billy, a Columban Father in Korea, and Phonsie, Carnamuggagh, a former Manager of the old Bacon Factory and a sister, Patricia (Patsy), New Line Road who was well known in town as the former Vice Principal of Loreto Convent.

Requiem Mass was celebrated in St Eunan's Cathedral, Letterkenny on Sunday at 12.30 p.m and burial took place afterwards in Conwal Cemetery.
