Charity cyclist hit in accident

BY CRONAN SCANLON

A MAN taking part in a fund-raising cycle in aid of a road accident victim was himself knocked off his bicycle and seriously injured at the weekend.

The man, who is in his sixties and from Milford, was reportedly struck by a car at Illistrin Little, Coolboy on Saturday.

The incident took place on a minor road after the cycle was diverted as a result of two separate accidents on the main Letterkenny to Kilmacrennan road.

He was rushed to Letterkenny General Hospital (LGH) where he remained in a "critical but stable" condition yesterday according to a hospital spokesperson.

He was taking part in the cycle to raise money for the Michael Neilis Recovery Fund.

The fund was set-up earlier this year for Churchill man, Michael Neilis, who was seriously injured after he was struck by a van in the High Road area of Letterkenny.

Meanwhile, several others were also rushed to LGH following two separate accidents between Letterkenny and Kilmacrennan.

The first incident occurred between 10am and 12 noon outside McCafferty's Pub at Ballaghderg, Letterkenny where two cars were involved in a serious collision.

Those involved were taken to hospital but were released following checks.

The second crash at Bluebanks outside Kilmacrennan involved up to four vehicles but again no one was seriously injured.

The three accidents resulted in diversions and long tail-backs along the busy road.

A garda spokesman said anyone who witnessed any of these incidents should contact them at Letterkenny, Kilmacrennan or Milford garda stations.
