THE growing problem of traffic gridlock on the Glencar Road at McGovern Road junction in Letterkenny is a 'nightmare'.
Speaking at Monday night's Town Council meeting, Cllr Tom Crossan, called for urgent action to be taken to alleviate traffic congestion at the junction which serves several housing estates and the local gaeil scoil.
"I'm calling in a motion here tonight for a review of the junction at McGovern Road-Glencar Road to be undertaken to examine options for relief of traffic congestion associated with the gaeil scoil," Cllr Crossan said.
One of worst
Supporting the motion, Cllr Ciaran Brogan, said it was one of the worst junctions in the county.
"The Land Usage and Transportation Study (LUTS) carried out recently in Letterkenny identifies this junction as being in need of urgent attention. Traffic congestion is serious and it is highly dangerous. Cars coming down the Glencar Road have to stop to let cars out from the McGovern Road and this causes danger," he said.
Cllr Dessie Larkin, said it had been an issue that has dragged on for recent years.
"Residents and schoolgoers are suffering in the area because of the traffic problem in this area," he said.
