Donegal Olympics bid launched

DONEGAL is being marketed as the ideal training ground for Olympic and Paralympic teams for athletes competing in the 2012 Olympics.

Donegal County Council have prepared a brochure outlining the top class training facilities available in the Finn Valley Centre, Regional Leisure Centre and the support services available in the county. Donegal is the first county in the Republic to prepare a comprehensive package of the facilities and transport links available.

The Community and Enterprise section of the Council formed an Olympic Response Team who will provide the first point of contact for prospective teams wishing to come to Donegal for climate training ahead of the 2012 London Olympics. The council will also work in conjunction with Donegal Sports Partnership to co-ordinate familiarisation visits to the county.

Billed as an ideal location to train for success the brochure lauds the accommodation provided by Letterkenny Institute of Technology, linguistic support, training and medical support, volunteer assistance and logistic support available in a scenic setting. The brochure will be used as Donegal's calling card to over 400 National Olympic, National Paraolympic Committees, and International Sports Federations throughout the world.

Officially launching the campaign, in County House, Lifford, Meara of Donegal County Council, Cllr John Boyle said " I am delighted to launch this marketing campaign which will see Donegal being promoted to over 400 sporting organisations throughout the world as an ideal location for pre-games training camps for the London 2012 Games."

"I would like to wish this initiative every success in its endeavours to capitalise not only on the economic opportunities that London 2012 presents but also on securing a positive legacy for sport in Donegal," said Cllr Boyle.
