TWO fascinating aspects of the local history of Raymochy Parishes will be addressed at the Resource Centre in Manorcunningham on Wednesday 19 September.
The Raymochy Local Historical Society have arranged a lecture on the History of the United Irishmen in East Donegal to be given by Belinda Mahaffy. The second lecture of the evening will tell the story of Captain Henry Gallagher from Balleighan, who was killed at the Somme in 1916. This will be given by retired LT Col Declan O'Carroll.
Organiser Mr Leonard Roarty said the planned lectures contrasted the two sides of the divide which existed at the time.
"We will hear of pikes being made in the local blacksmiths for the United Irishmen at the time and how a sympathetic magistrate allowed them to avoid prosecution.
"These lectures are part of an ongoing series organised by the historical society and they have proved very entertaining and informative about the local parishes,' Mr Roarty said.
The two lectures start at 8 pm in the Resource Centre. Anyone wishing to join the Raymochy Parishes Local Historical Society can do so for ¤10 per adult and ¤5 for students.
