McLaughlin stars as Termon win

The Termon team celebrate their victory.

Termon 8-7

Moville 2-10

By James Trearty

Geraldine McLaughlin led Termon to an exciting win in the minor championship replay on Saturday. McLaughlin who started at corner forward roamed all over the forward line and contributed immensely to this exciting game.

Indeed Moville, who were unlucky in the previous week's game - the game was snatched from them in the final minute by a late goal - were no match for Termon in the replay.

This was a game that was nearly not played due to a heavy fog on the playing field.

Referee Kieran O'Shea delayed kick off for fifteen minutes for conditions to improve and indeed both set of players and supporters had difficulty seeing what was happening in the opposite part of the field and had often to relay on the volume of the applause to determine whether it was a goal or a point that was scored.

Termon were up for this game started in a whirlwind fashion and Geraldine McLaughlin had a point before Roisin Friel fed her a goal on four minutes. Friel herself pointed from a McLaughlin pass before Geraldine McLaughlin netted the goal of the game. Picking up a pass from Roisin Friel she weaved her way goalwards evading several tackles before deftly slotting the ball into the lower corner of Shauna Mc Dermot's net.

Aoife Hegarty, the Moville manager, took county player Geraldine Harkin from full forward to midfield while Trmon boss Maureen O'Donnell countered by switching Nicole McLaughlin onto the industrious Niamh McLaughlin. Indeed Jamie Leigh Murray who had been marking McLaughlin then went on to have one of her finest hours in a Termon shirt.

When the dust settled over these changes Moville got on the score board with an excellent Niamh McLaughlin point followed by a Geraldine Harkin goal. Geraldine McLaughlin added further points and Dara Kelly with a deft goal completed Termon account while Moville had points from Niamh mc Laughlin to leave half time Termon 3-3 Moville 1-5.

Referee Kieran O'Shea did not endear himself to the Termon supporters or manager when shortly after the resumption he yellow carded Roisin Friel which meant an automatic sin bin for ten minutes.

Indeed this antagonism was compounded when a lengthy period of stoppage time occurred in this ten minute period which saw Tara McDaid being helped from the playing field to be replaced by Orla Trearty. On her resumption to the playing field Friel would give a wonderful performance. Her ability to catch and carry the ball teased and tormented the Moville defenders and she laid off passed with great accuracy to Termon forwards.

It was no surprise that Termon who were now in ascendancy had further scores from Geraldine McLaughlin, Roisin McCafferty, Orla Trearty and Dara Kelly. Moville who had a never say did attitude had several chances for scores but great defending by Claire McDermott, Petra McCafferty, and Emer Gallagher kept Moville's danger person Niamh McLaughlin's tally to 1--6 and Geraldine Harkin who finished with a personal tally of 1-1 Termon who also lost Emer Gallagher to a yellow card struggled at times, and indeed the large attendance were served with a tight game despite what the scoreline read.

Ciara Hegarty Geraldine Harkin and Leona Furlong tried hard for Moville. This was Termon's day who had a well balanced team managed by Maureen O'Donnell assisted by Olive McCafferty.

After the result Michael Naughton chairman of the ladies board presented the cup to the winning captain Roisin McCafferty and he spoke at length concerning the standard of football in difficult conditions by two excellent footballing teams.

Termon team was Caroline Gallagher, Clare McDermott, Petra McCafferty, Emer Gallagher, Sharon Doherty, Nicola McLaughlin, Jamie Leigh Murray Roisin McCafferty, Niamh Friel, Tara McDaid, Roisin Friel Fiona McLaughlin, Geraldine McLaughlin, Dara Kelly, Caroline Duffy. Subs used were Orla Trearty, Aisling Ryan, Freda McCusker, Laura McConigley,Chloe McGettigan, Molly Callaghan. Moville: Shauna McDermott, Laura Bonnar, Leona Furlong, Geraldine Cavanagh, Emmer Cavanagh, Sharon McDonald, Danielle Logue, Ciara Hegarty, Orla Furlong, Shiona Kelly, Charmina McDermott, Niamh Mc Laughlin, Geraldine Harkin, Loraine McLarkey. Referee Kieran O'Shea .
