A Lisnaskea man who was found by police asleep behind the wheel of his car has been fined £200 and disqualified from driving for 12 months at Fermanagh Magistrates Court.
Before the court charged with being drunk in charge of a vehicle and other motoring related offences was Desmond Paul Corrigan (29) with an address at Drumbroughas, North Lisnaskea. The court heard that around 3.45am on 19th April this year police received information which tasked them to the Derrylin area where they came across a green car sitting at the side of the road with its headlights on.
The car engine was running and the keys were in the ignition. Police observed a male sitting slumped in the car with his head leaning against the window. The male was sleeping and didn't respond when police tried to wake him. When they opened the door he slumped out of the car. It took seven more attempts by officers before they managed to wake the defendant.
He was unable to stand and his speech was slurred. At 4.10am he was arrested on suspicion of being drunk in charge of a vehicle. A breath sample revealed a reading of 93mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath - 58 in excess of the legal limit. Defending, Barry Lynam said the defendant was employed locally as a labourer and he had only acquired this vehicle a short time before this incident. For being drunk in charge of a vehicle Resident Magistrate Liam McNally imposed a fine of £200 and imposed a 12 month disqualification. For driving without insurance he was fined £100 and disqualified for six months. For driving without a licence and a test certificate fines of £50 on each charge were imposed.
