Enniskillen's return to the home turf of Brewster Park wasn't to have the appropriate celebratory ending. Instead visiting Derrygonnelly proved to be party poopers on the red letter evening for the Gaels, the Harps edging out a slender one point victory.

So not the result that Enniskillen would have hoped for to mark an historic occasion but the could have no real complaint about suffering this defeat for Derrygonnelly over the course of the hour did have the greater bulk of the attacking play and in the end were worthy enough of their memorable success.

Memorable, because this was not just a routine league tie, but a day for the history books and the win will always be remembered on this special occasion.

Enniskillen couldn't have wished for a more satisfying start to their new life on the home ground. A high ball was pumped into the Derrygonnelly goal area, Paul Brewster won possession and he smacked home an excellent goal. It should have been the signal for an exhilarating Enniskillen performance but instead the initiative flowed to Derrygonnelly.

However the visitors were to make heavy going of the attacking play they enjoyed and scores for them came only sporadically. Sean Meehan, Kevin McGrath and Jonathan McGurn finally picked up points for them but a mixture of ill luck and poor finishing kept them in arrears.

As for Enniskillen they were becoming overly dependent on target man Ronan McCabe. He was to contribute a number of exceptional points from play but support was indifferent.

At the break the goal was still the critical factor, giving Enniskillen a two point advantage but that situation changed on the resumption with Derrygonnelly nudging ahead for the first time with scores from Ryan Jones, Kevin Cassidy and Jonathan McGurn the latter's 45 putting the Harps in the lead on forty minutes.

The final quarter was to be nicely poised affair. McCabe swung over a terrific point for the Gaels, Paul Gunn levelled late in the game and sandwiched in between were Harps points from Jones and McGurn. The game had moved into added on time when the final score arrived, approach work that involved Peter Gallagher paving the way for a Declan Cassidy point for the Harps. Still time remaining for Enniskillen to at least salvage a draw and they were to have in fact a chance to poach the win.

But a fine piece of defensive play by Derrygonnelly's Terence Greene brought off a block that denied the Gaels the match winner. For the winners there was to be sound defensive display all round, Eamon McHugh especially effective and in the middle of the park the pairing of Martin Greene and Ryan Jones had the edge over opposing duo, Richard O'Callaghan and Ryan McCluskey.

For Enniskillen, Kevin Gunn was steady in the back division, Michael Kerr had his moments but only Ronan McCabe looked sprightly enough to consistently trouble the Derrygonnelly rearguard.
