Kinawley girls' a credit to their club and county

There was an extra treat for members of the All-Ireland winning Feile (U-14) squad in the Townhall this week when they were guests of the Council chairman, Alex Baird.

He was told that the girls were among 150 teams who had taken part in the competition in Ballinglera in County Leitrim ('no mean achievement', was his instant reaction) and their progress from round one, when they played the host club, then the Four Roads in round two, winning by 3-6 to 1-2 to reach the semi-final.

Councillor Baird heard that the Group that Kinawley were in was tough, and no tougher than the game against Four Roads. He himself took up the story: 'In the semi-final, they had to play the Derry champions, Rossa and, here, Kinawley produced their best football of the competition. Their fast-flowing attack and resolute defence led to a 5-9 to 1-2 win".

And, so to that memorable final where Kinawley were up against none other than New York!

"Here, I am told, Kinawley looked slightly unsure at the start, but they soon got into their stride and it was end-to-end play for a long time, with both teams trading points. However, the major turning-point in the game when Kinawley scored a goal. After that, the result was in no doubt they Kinawley ran out worthy winners".

Addressing the squad, Councillor Baird said: "Girls, you are tremendous ambassadors for Kinawley and County Fermanagh.

"I congratulate you and your captain, Roisin O'Reilly, and here, I would like to mention your coaches and the support team, including your parents who have given you all the support and preparation you needed for this tournament".

He then invited his young guests to sign the Visitors Book as a permanent record of their fantastic success.
