Army looks for new recruits

As part of the wider normalisation efforts, The Army opened its latest Recruitment Office in Enniskillen on Saturday.

The Office, at Rossary Church Road, opposite the Portora Royal School and the Round 'O', replaces the former centre in Omagh which closed with the closure of Lisanelly Barracks.

The opening in Enniskillen follows on from the recent launch of another new office in Portadown which offers the same facilities.

The centre, known as the Enniskillen Army Careers Information Office (ACIO) was officially opened by Captain Richard Deane MC of the Prince of Wales Royal Regiment. Colonel Dick Rafferty, Commander of Regional Recruiting in Northern Ireland hosted the event and welcomed invited guests.

To celebrate the opening, the centre was opened to the public and as well as being able to discuss career opportunities with representatives of the Regular and Territorial Army, attendees also enjoyed tackling the climbing wall, rifle range shooting and paintballing.

Sergeant Major George Cowan, who will oversee the running of the ACIO, believes that it will offer a vital resource to those considering a full or part time career in the Army.

"Enniskillen is an ideal location to open a recruitment office as it reaches the whole of the Fermanagh and Tyrone area, and beyond" he said, "We have always been delighted to welcome interest from the west of the province, and this centre will provide interested parties with information on all aspects of a career in the armed forces."

Col. Dick Rafferty added: "We have a proud history over many years of welcoming recruits from Enniskillen and indeed all of Fermanagh and Tyrone. These new modern facilities will I hope indicate our commitment to offering real career opportunities to both men and women from the area.

"We are delighted with the turnout in Enniskillen and the level of interest, and look forward to welcoming many more to the office in the future."
