Better roads a vital lifeline for the West

The SDLP's Western Development Spokesperson Tommy Gallagher has responded to calls by the Quarry Products Association for greater funding for Northern Ireland roads, saying that 'the roads network is the only economic lifeline for the West.'

Mr Gallagher said, "The Report highlights what people in West know too well; by comparison with the Republic of Ireland and the United Kingdom, our roads are disgracefully underfunded.

NO RAILWAYS

"The West has no other transport infrastructure, we have no railways. Local industries and businesses have been saying for years the cost of transport is the biggest disadvantage they have to overcome," he added.

Mr Gallagher revealed that he had tabled an Assembly motion highlighting this issue, and that his call for a Taskforce for the West was defeated following a DUP amendment by one vote.

"The Assembly has to take a more serious look at the economic drawbacks for the West as a result of poor quality roads", he stated.
