Maguiresbridge
come up short

DERRYGONNELLY .................. 1-12

MAGUIRESBRIDGE .................. 1-9

Trailing by two points at the break on a scoreline of six points to four, Maguiresbridge made a positive second half start in this Erne Cup division one tie with Derrygonnelly. A goal knocked in by Shane Ingram jumped the 'Bridge into the lead but they were unable to push on from there.

For a few minutes it seemed that this 'Bridge goal would be the game's decisive moment but Derrygonnelly were to stall the Maguiresbridge effort and when the Harps worked their way in for a goal in reply the game swung in their favour. In the end it was to be a three point success for Derrygonnelly and overall it was a merited enough win for they had been the side who had, in the main, shaded matters.

For Derrygonnelly, corner back Dermott Carroll had an especially fine match and in fact he was to play a role in setting up his team's crucial goal. Paul Greene got through a lot of work in the middle of the park for the Harps and in their forward line Niall Gilleece in the half forward line was a prominent figure.

As for Maguiresbridge, Sean Logan was perhaps their most consistent defender on view and Sean McAvinney did well in the half back line. Up front it was Matthew Teague who generally created the most problems for the Derrygonnelly rearguard.

Barry McGrath was to be the top marksman for Derrygonnelly with a fine display of place kicking and he was to finish with a tally of six points in all. First half points for Maguiresbridge were supplied by Matthew Teague, Sean McAvinney and Liam Maye and then Shane Ingram fired in the morale boosting goal two minutes after the resumption.

Derrygonnelly absorbed the blow and then struck back with Dermott Carroll well forward from his deep defensive corner back position coming in on the wing to fist over a centre and Niall Gilleece raced in to fist home from close in.

Second half points for the winners were tossed over by Barry McGrath, Noel Gallagher and Francis McGurl with Sean McAvinney the main respondent for the 'Bridge.
