"We plan to have a great time with Grandmother's Market Day this Friday, 6th June, from 10-12 noon, and all the children are working very hard', that was the verdict of Vicky Herbert, the secretary of Lisnaskea Historical Society, the event organisers.
The event, a re-enactment, in period dress of the way market days looked like 40-plus years ago will involve four local schools, St Ronan's' PS, The Moat PS, Maguiresbridge PS and St. Mary's PS Maguiresbridge.
These are the same four schools which did last year's re-enactment of the crowning of the Maguires at the Moate Ring on the edge of the town.
"The Historical Society is enjoying working with the youngsters, and our members are only too glad to give them a sense of what used to be done in their own town. Each school is doing the entertainment," Vicky explained, " taking part in sketches and buying and selling things on their stalls, so it would be great if everyone would come and support them."
Whatever they make from their stalls will be going back to their own school funds.
This traditional event, takes place in Lisnaskea's famous Corn Market. The children, and some of the adults who are taking part, will be dressed as their grandparents would have been in the 1940's; the men in black trousers with waistcoat and cap, and the women wearing long skirts complete with either a shawl or a bag apron and a hat to top it all off.
The day's programme kicks off at 10am on Friday with the arrival of the children in the market square where they will immediately set up their stalls retailing home-produced goods, ranging from jams to vegetables.
