Female driver 'stable' after road traffic collision


The condition of the female driver, from Cavan, of a single vehicle road traffic collision that occurred on mid-morning on Friday last, 27th June near Newtownbutler was described by a spokesman for Beaumont Hospital in Dublin on Monday as 'stable'.

She was in a critical condition following the accident which occurred on the southern side of the Border close to the Leggykelly Inn on the Newtownbutler-Cavan road shortly after 11.30 on Friday morning after her car left the road and collided with trees at a corner regarded locally as, 'notoriously dangerous'. The Fire Service attended the scene and cut the driver free from the wreckage.

The victim was rushed to Cavan General Hospital and was transferred to Beaumont Hospital later on Friday evening. On Monday morning, a hospital spokesman described her condition as, 'stable'. She is believed to have suffered from a fractured skull and internal bleeding.

The road where the accident happened was closed on both sides of the Border by the Gardai, in the south and by the PSNI in the North. Diversions remained in place until around 6.45pm on Friday.

Meanwhile, Lisnaskea Police have renewed their appeal for information about the traffic collision which, a spokesman confirmed, happened at about 11.30am on Friday last when a Nissan Almera car left the road and struck a tree close to the Legakelly Inn public house Newtownbutler. No other vehicles were involved.

The female driver, from County Cavan, was taken initially to Cavan General Hospital and later transferred to hospital in Dublin.

Anyone who witnessed the impact or who was on the Cavan Road at 11.30am on Friday is asked to contact police on 0845 600 8000.

Meanwhile, Gardaí in Ballyconnell are appealing for witnesses to a fatal single vehicle fatal road traffic collision which occured on the Ballyconnell-Derrylin Road at Scotchtown, Ballyconnell at approximately 9pm on Wednesday, 18th June.

The deceased was 22 year old Seamus O' Brien of Augheraskilla, Ballyconnell. A Garda spokeswoman said he was the only occupant of the car which went out of control.

In particular, Gardai are appealing for any person who may have seen the car involved in the collision, a black Honda Civic in the Scotchtown area prior to the collision.
