Clogher Historical Society's autumn programme begins with a talk on the 'Irish in Europe Project' in Monaghan County Library, Clones, next Wednesday 24th September at 8pm, this being a change from the original date and venue.
The project, run by a group at NUI Maynooth, has been collecting information on Irish exiles in Europe after the Flight of the Earls. Co-director, Dr Marian Lyons, will talk about the information that has been collected over the past few years on Irish soldiers, diplomats, entrepreneurs, priests and even a slave-trader. The Irish have been tracked to places as diverse as Sweeden, France, Spain, Portugal and Austria, where some attained positions of considerable influence. An excellent exhibition that accompanies the project at the National Library in Kildare Street, Dublin and the database on the project website. Everyone is welcome to attend this event and there is no charge. Refreshments provided.
On Saturday 27th September at 2.00pm, members will take a tour of the Colebrooke Estate near Brookeborough, guided by Viscount Alan Brooke. The society is delighted to be allowed access to the big house and to see the work that has been done by the Landmark Trust on the gate lodge at the Triumphal Arch. There are still some places left on the tour. Contact: +353 (0)47 71984, www.clogherhistory.ie, chs@eircom.net.
