Town couple in dock on drugs charges

AN Enniskillen couple have appeared in the dock at East Tyrone Magistrates Court charged in relation to two sets of drugs offences.

Derek McCordick (27) and his 18-year-old girlfriend Lindsey Nelson of Coleshill Park are jointly charged with being in possession of herbal cannabis and with intent to supply, on November 12 and December 9.

A Detective Constable under oath said he could connect both accused, telling the Court a search carried out on the first occasion revealed a quantity of drugs and a set of scales.

Cash totalling £935 was also seized. Another search on December 9 revealed more cannabis, as well a second set of scales hidden in shed.

More cash (£380) was recovered from Nelson who tried to conceal it in her underwear.

McCordick, who was described as having a huge criminal record, is currently on licence from prison until November 2010.

The Detective said he was opposed to bail for McCordick or Nelson as there is a significant fear of both reoffending.

But District Judge John Meehan was agreeable to releasing Nelson on bail providing he resided with her parents in Newtownbutler.

She must also surrender to drugs tests as required, abide by a curfew from 11pm to 8am and allow herself and any vehicle she travels in to be searched under the Misuse of Drugs Act.

McCordick was refused bail as Judge Meehan noted, "He is defiant and cannot be relied upon to abstain from re-offending."

Nelson sobbed in dock before both were returned to the cells.

Her bail was set in the sum of £300 with a £500 surety.

Both will appear at Enniskillen Magistrates Court on January 1.
