Motorcyclist within point of driving ban

An Enniskillen motorcyclist incurred 11 penalty points on his driving licence, leaving him one point away from disqualification, following his detection riding a bike without the appropriate licence or insurance for the vehicle.

He was also ordered to pay fines of £325 for the offences.

Fermanagh Magistrates Court was told that Darren Stephen Keaney (23), from Lisgoole Park, was charged with the offences after police on mobile patrol came across a minor road accident at Moyglass, on the Derrygonnelly Road, in June this year.

A prosecution solicitor told the court both parties in the accident had exchanged details when the officers arrived.

However, a police check then revealed Keaney did not have a licence or insurance to cover him for this vehicle.

Defence solicitor, Bernard Corrigan explained his client, who is employed by a local garage, did have a full licence and insurance at the time of the crash, but neither of them covered him to drive this particular CC of a motorbike.

His client had only bought the bike on the evening in question and was driving it back home. He said Keaney had taken steps to rectify the situation and had now passed his motorbike test and was fully insured.

Mr Corrigan explained Keaney already had four points on his licence, and said his job required he was on 24-hour call out to attend break-down's. Mr Corrigan submitted:

"He has dealt with this matter in an expeditious manner and regularised the situation.

He and his family treat this with the utmost seriousness, particularly when the defendant's employment is in jeopardy."
