Topper sailors enjoy great success

The fourth in the Topper Traveller Series was held on 14 July 2007, being hosted by Blessington Sailing Club, Blessington, Co Wicklow. Competing at the event were four local Topper sailors from Lough Erne Yacht Club, Robert Murray, Fionnan Martin, Ali Ghareeb and Ashraf Ghareeb.

There were 36 sailors competing at the event again representing yacht clubs from all areas of Ireland. All sailors launched on time for the first gun at 11.25 hrs again as with previous Topper Travellers they experienced very calm weather for the first race and the wind slightly improving for the second race. After completion of this race they came ashore for lunch, re-launching for the third and final race of the day at 14-20 hrs, with the prevailing weather conditions only just managing to start the race within the time limit set at 15.00 hrs. The wind was still only light but nearing the end of this race a severe squall came in accompanied by thunder and heavy rain, making sailing difficult for the younger sailors out on the water.

The four LEYC sailors all putting in excellent performances Robert Murray achieved 2nd U14 and 9th overall, Ali Ghareeb 1st U16 and 5th overall, Fionnan Martin U14 25th overall and Ashraf Ghareeb U14 16th overall.

The next major event will the Topper Irish National Championships being held over three days from 27 to 29 July 2007, this is being hosted by East Down Yacht Club, Killyleagh, Co Down.
