Hospital remains on schedule

Despite recent set-backs, construction work on the new South West Hospital outside Enniskillen is very much still on schedule for completion by 2012.

A spokesperson for the Western Trust reported that the general construction programme was progressing to schedule and that the work was focusing on sub-structure works and piling.

Piling works started in June this year, and this work is now almost 50% complete, the spokesperson added.

"Sub-structure works are in progress and the contractor has also begun the pouring of transfer slabs. The structural steel for the first stage of the construction is currently in fabrication."

Referring to a recent set-back, the spokesperson acknowledged some ground movement had occurred in July at an isolated pocket of ground at the northern boundary on the site. However, she explained, this had been dealt with when the contractor immediately put into operation systems to manage the situation appropriately and the area has been sealed off, with work temporarily suspended in this zone.

"This has not affected the ongoing work programme for the New Acute Hospital which continues on the remainder of the site and is currently progressing to schedule. "

Visually, things will really start to take shape later this year when 'Mock-up' rooms are built for staff to view at the site.

The Northern Ireland Health Group (NIHG), who are leading the build, are currently finalising plans for this. These rooms will include a typical patient single room with en-suite, as well as a children's bedroom. Construction is due to be completed and ready for a formal handover in Spring 2012, with opening to patients in summer that year.

Leading the Project for the Western Trust, Mary Maguire acknowledged the tremendous amount of work that has been put into the project by hospital staff and the project team.

She said: "The Trust is very satisfied with progress to date and delighted to see the construction team working on the site and on track to complete the new buildings in the first half of 2012. "Efforts are now focused on maintaining the momentum of the construction programme and preparing staff and the local community for the transition to the new 21st Century hospital facilities." NIHG Project Director, Keith Abel said: "We are delighted with progress made to date on the New Acute Hospital for the South West Project in the three months since financial close was reached. "Construction progress is on schedule as is the design development process which involves a wide range of stakeholders. We are pleased with how well those involved are engaging with our team and are very much looking forward to working with the population of the South West in delivering this key Project."
