The day has arrived and it has been worth the wait! The Faldo Championship Course at the Lough Erne Golf Resort is open for business.
This magnificent course, set on a 600-acre peninsula between Castle Hume Lough and Lower Lough Erne, hosted its first paying customer this morning (Wednesday) at 9.00am, with the much anticipated 'Duel on the Lough' between Padraig Harrington and Rory McIlroy just three weeks away (July 22nd).
So, the people of Fermanagh have an opportunity to get out and sample the greens' fairways but, hopefully not the bunkers of this jewel in the crown of Fermanagh before two of the world's greatest golfers come to pit their wits against it.
Director of Golf at the Lough Erne Golf Resort, Andy Campbell, spoke about the opening to the 'Herald' this week.
"It is a very exciting time for everyone here at the hotel but, hopefully also, for the people of Fermanagh, and we certainly hope and believe that everyone will be pleased with the course when they get a chance to see it or play it."
Mr Campbell went on to praise the Resort's owner, Jim Treacy.
"I think the course is a true reflection of Jim's passion for the area. It is he and his family who should be taking the accolades for this. The passion and commitment that they have shown to put this in place has to be commended. It takes courage and imagination to do what has been done and the people of Fermanagh can feel very proud of this course."
About the course itself, Mr Campbell felt it 'reflected the resurgence that has been apparent in Northern Ireland over the last number of years', and he was in no doubt that the Faldo Course at the Lough Erne Golf Resort would take its place alongside the very top courses in Ireland.
Alongside the opening of the course itself is the opening of 'The Loughside Clubhouse, Bar & Grill', which directly overlooks Castle Hume Lough.
The opening of the Faldo Championship Course at Lough Erne will be marked by a play-off between three times major champion, Padraig Harrington and 20-year-old Holywood (Belfast) man, Rory McIlroy on 22nd July. Mcllroy, Lough Erne's touring professional, is currently ranked 16th in the world following his debut in the US Open where he finished tied in 10th position.
