July in the garden

June in the garden was a terrific month for colour from shrubs to your summer bedding plants, although as I was writing the long awaited rainfall had arrived, let's hope it remembers to go away again.

Now that all your baskets, tubs and borders are planted with bedding plants your attention will turn back to your existing perennial and shrub beds or where you can fill in gaps or dig a new area, your garden centre will be stocked up again with shrubs now that the bedding is over.

Everyone with perennial flower beds will find them in full bloom in July and no matter how variable the colours they never seem to clash.

Continue feeding all plants and also continue spraying against pests and diseases.

Protect fruit bushes and trees from birds by draping netting over them, which is available from your local garden centre.

Remove dead leaves from all shrubs to help them look their best.

Continue to prune as required, after flowering and also dead heading to allow for re-flowering.

Most people today buy plants from garden centres or high street stores. The beauty of a garden centre is that plants are sold in containers and so can be planted at virtually any time of the year provided they are hardy and your soil is suitable.

The advantage that a garden centre has over any other plant supplier is variety, usually if you can't get the particular plant you are looking for in the garden centre you will generally find something similar as the range is generally massive.

REMOVING SUCKERS

Remove all suckers from your plants, be it coming from the roots or on the girth of your shrubs and trees, suckers are more likely found on i.e.

Roses

Lilac

Rhododendrons

If they are not removed eventually they will swamp the plant.
