Young musician of the year quest begins


The search is on for the Northern Ireland 'Young Musician of the Year' 2008. The event organised by the Rotary Club of Comber and supported by Matchetts Music aims to provide a platform for young musicians to gain competition experience.

"The event is an opportunity for the Rotary Club of Comber to show its commitment to two major local charities, the NI Cancer Fund for Children and the NI Music Therapy Trust said Rotary organiser Duggie Anderson.

The winner's prize will include £250 in Matchetts vouchers and an engraved Tyrone Crystal trophy. All finalists will receive certificates.

The competition is open to all solo instrumentalists aged 12 to 16 inclusive and singers aged 12 to 18 inclusive. Entrants will appear in three heats in Comber on February 25, 26, 27. The adjudicator will select the best performers to appear in the Final on Saturday, March 1.

Entry forms and rules are being sent to second-level schools and colleges throughout the county. They can also be downloaded from www.comberrotary.org or by e-mailing duggie@danderson.prestel.co.uk

Cars vandalised in Kesh

Two cars have been vandalised at Agharainey Road, Kesh.

A rear tyre was slashed on one of the cars, and it also had the rear wiper and aerial damaged. The aerial of the second car was broken off.

The damage was caused on Friday night last, 26th October. Anyone who saw suspicious activity in the area is asked to contact local police. The number to call with any information is 0845 600 8000, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Police arrest man in Irvinestown

One man was arrested by Police who were investigating a robbery and an attempted robbery in Irvinestown and Enniskillen, respectively, on Monday night.

A PSNI spokesman said the first incident took place at around 9pm when a man who gave the impression he was armed, held up a shop in the town. The second man was detained arising from a second incident a short time later, he added, following an attempt to rob a shop in Enniskillen.

Diabetes Group talk on food labelling

The Fermanagh Voluntary Group, Diabetes UK are holding a meeting on Wednesday,7th November in the Railway Hotel, Enniskillen.

Understanding food labelling and what people with diabetes can and cannot eat is very important and Rosemary Reid, Paediatric Dietician at the Erne Hospital will be in attendance and give advice. Everyone with an interest is very welcome to this meeting.

Do you know that you are at risk of diabetes if you are a man with more than a 37" waist and a woman with more than a 31" waist? There are over 3,500 people in Fermanagh with diabetes and over 750,000 in the whole of the United Kingdom who have diabetes and do not know it.

Ann Harland and Dinah Shortt hope that this event will be well attended - the Fermanagh Group has a lot to offer you by way of support.

Ceili News

The Ceili and Buffet arranged for Friday, 9th November has been changed to Friday, 14th December (More details later).

Ceili dates: Friday, 2nd November - Moville, Co. Donegal; Saturday, 3rd November - Bellaghy, Cavanacarragh and Mullabrack; Sunday, 4th November - Eskra, Co. Tyrone; Friday, 9th November - Derrynoose, Co. Armagh.

Ceili dancing classes: Monday - Dungiven; Tuesday - Aughnacloy; Brookeborough and Killeshil; Wednesday - Killyman and Dessertmartin; Thursday - Dunloy, Co. Antrim.

A week of prayer

The Irish Christian Endeavour Union's Annual Week of Prayer will be observed from 5th- 11th November.

Every Union, including members of the Enniskillen Union, will be making its own arrangements.

Mrs Stephanie Neil, originally from County Fermanagh, the Irish Union Prayer Convenor has circulated suggested prayer points throughout Ireland.

Petrol bomb thrown through window

Police in Enniskillen are appealing for witnesses to come forward following an incident in the Cleenish Park area on Wednesday night of last week, 17th October when a petrol bomb was thrown through the window of a house.

A PSNI spokesman stated that a well-built man in a red hooded top was seen in the area at the time.

Anyone who was in the area and could help identify the suspect or has information regarding the incident is asked to contact detectives on 0845 600 8000 or 'Crimestoppers' on 0800 555 111.
