Lisnaskea Boat Club, whose premises are ideally sited on the shores of Upper Lough Erne at Derryadd, about four miles from Lisnaskea on the Derrylin Road, got a much needed shot in the arm recently with a 'revival' festival.
Hard-working committee member, June Jordan explained that deaths and emigration among members had impacted on progress. However, in recent years, the members had rolled up their sleeves and, in the absence of government grants, got stuck into renewing the harbours and other coastline features.
The idea for the 'revival festival', she explained was to stir fund raising ideas to pay for the work and implant into minds a focus on renewing the Club's once popular annual festival.
"The Day went terrific. Weather wise, it was marvellous and, entertainment wise as well. It was good to see so many young people out and about, all enjoying themselves. Years ago, you will recall that our Boat Club Festival had power-boat racing in its programme, and we were really thrilled that Will Chambers (a former European champion who lives locally) got a few people he knew to come along with their boats.
"There was certainly a lot of good feed back from it and it really went a long way to restoring our confidence after the lows of the past few years. Some years ago, the annual festival attracted a fantastic number of people, but we lost a number of stalwarts and things have declined since with not a lot of activity going on.
"What we're at is, we're merely trying to give things a push and get people to come back to us".
June added that serious efforts were now underway by other Club members to source that badly needed funding.
