The Diocese of Clogher last year contributed ¤114,551 to the work of Missionaries from a world-wide response to Mission Sunday. The Day is a day set aside each year for Catholics worldwide to recommit themselves to the Church's missionary activity through prayer and sacrifice, and donations. Last year Mission Sunday took place on October 22nd.
The contribution from the Diocese of Clogher represented a 9% increase on its contributions from the previous year. It means that, since 2000, the people of the Diocese have donated ¤677,177 to the missions and missionaries around the world.
The Clogher Diocesan Director of the Propagation of the Faith, Fr John McCabe thanked the people of the Diocese for their generosity.
"Every contribution will have an impact among young churches around the world and will be put to good use by Irish missionaries", he stated. " The funds donated during Mission Sunday are sent in their entirety to support vital projects, such as the building of schools, churches and orphanages, for the education of seminarians and by way of response to the spiritual needs of parishioners."
No administrative cost is taken from the donations received.
The Propagation of the Faith's national director, Fr Ed Grimes likewise expressed his gratitude to the people in the Diocese of Clogher for their generosity.
"The Mission Sunday collection has taken place in Ireland for more than 80 years", he said. "and while Ireland has undergone many changes in recent years, it is clear that people remain committed to the missionary tradition and showing love and compassion to their brothers and sisters at home and overseas."
This year's Mission Sunday collection will take place on October 21st.
