In what is a first for Fermanagh, Fermanagh County Museum at Enniskillen Castle is celebrating Museums and Galleries month.
And to mark this month the Museum will be holding a special event to coincide with the Night of the Museums entitled 'Tales of the Unexpected' - A Night at the Museum'.
'Nuit Des Musees' is a European wide venture that will see museums and galleries across the continent opening their doors for special evening events on Saturday 19th May 2007.
Fermanagh County Museum is holding a free late opening event that will focus on the less well known, 'unexpected; elements of Fermanagh's heritage covering Fairy Forts to Ghost Tales in a lively presentation delivered by local historian and broadcaster Breege McCusker.
Last year some 3,000 museums took part and this promotion, which is now in its third year, is organised by the French Department under the patronage of the Council of Europe.
For one night each year over 1000 museums throughout Europe take part in this event, which allows visitors access to museums free of charge from sunset to late. The event aims to allow wider access to many treasured housed within the museum's great collections
Talking about the event, Sarah McHugh, Manager of Museum Services at Fermanagh County Museum says, "This event is our contribution to the European-wide 'Night at the Museums' and I hope that local people and visitors will come along to enjoy the hospitality and entertainment we are putting on.
"It is the first time the museum has opened its doors at such a late hour and we have named the event 'Tales of the Unexpected' because we will be showing all the surprise aspects of Fermanagh's culture and history. Superstitions, tall tales and local heritage will be explored. Traditional Irish music will be provided by Jim McGrath and refreshments will be served."
The event runs from 8.00pm to 11.00pm on Saturday 19th May.
