Stealing DVDs from Asda

A Lithuanian national who attempted to steal DVDs and computer games from the Asda supermarket in Enniskillen has appeared before a recent sitting of Fermanagh Magistrates Court. Jaroslav Bortkevic (22), with an address at Jubilee Hill in Enniskillen, was fined a total of £500.

The court heard on 23rd February this year police attended Asda in Erneside Shopping Centre and spoke to the store manager and a security guard. They told police officers they had seen the defendant, and another male, in the area where the computer games and DVDs are displayed. The defendant was seen putting some games into a shopping basket and later returning the cases to the shelf with the disks removed and the security tag tampered with. When the defendant was stopped, the Court was told, he had three disks concealed inside his coat.

Defending, Michael Sides told the court the defendant had come to Fermanagh from Lithuania 20 months ago. He submitted that his client had no convictions, neither had he an explanation for his actions on the day in question. "This was a whim which overcame him", he said.

The Resident Magistrate Austin Kennedy told the defendant he had been convicted of shoplifting, which was a serious offence. But, he said he would deal with the matter by way of a financial penalty imposing fines totally £500.
