As I was preparing for my holiday by sifting through my wardrobe and picking out suitable summer clothes I decided that I may as well prepare my wardrobe for the rapidly approaching autumn. Common sense will tell you that you won't be needing bright summer clothing such as canary yellow floral ra ra skirts or tropical maxi dresses but don't feel like you need to pack everything away as a number of trends from the summer season will be carried into autumn and even winter. Here are a few tips to help you rearrange your wardrobe for the approaching season.

BLACK

Hold on to anything black. Black is a must have colour which goes with everything be it skirts, tights, shoes, jackets or jewellery. Every winter wardrobe should contain a black fashion item of any description

TEA DRESSES

Pretty tea dresses in cool and warm colours are a must have for any autumn wardrobe. Bright and loud colours are out; however hold on to cute dresses with softer colours such as greys, cream, lilacs and purples. The English countryside theme is still featured for autumn only with a more autumn like approach. To adapt to the cooler temperatures team tea dresses with floral cardigans, lace trimmed jackets and tweed blazers.

RUFFLES, FRILLS & BOWS

Hold on to anything with ruffles, frills and bows as this will fit in well with autumn and winter's lady like and gothic themes. Don't forget to accessorise using next seasons antique style jewellery. Something as simple as a new necklace can bring any outfit up to date.

FLORAL PRINT

Autumn like tones in floral prints should certainly be kept to the front of your wardrobe, as the floral print will continue to be featured heavily in autumn and winter shop windows and floor plans.

CHECKS

If you have anything with checks, be it shirts, jackets, skirts or even tights move these to the front of your wardrobe right away. Tartan in particular will be a key look so get ahead and start wearing it now.

FOOTWEAR

In terms of footwear sadly we will be saying goodbye to our flat gladiator sandals, however don't get rid of these as they may make an appearance next summer.

I recently found a pair of lace up shoe boots at the bottom of my shoebox, which I will be moving to the top as soon as I get back from holiday.

We will be back to wearing our boots come mid September so make sure you keep these to the front of your wardrobe.

Flat pumps can be worn with tights and tea dresses or with trousers or skirts.

Keep anything with leopard print and anything purple, patent or suede.

ACCESSORIES

In terms of bags, once again hold on to anything black. Leopard print will also be featured for autumn so keep this available also. Browns are always big for autumn so if you have anything in rich leather (real or fake) or patent hold on to this also.

Antique style jewellery will be seen everywhere for autumn and winter so if you, your mum or your granny have anything eye catching keep this on top of your jewellery box.

Chandelier or dangly earrings plain or bejewelled should also be kept forward. Layering jewellery will be essential for keeping on trend so hold on to beads & long chains.
