Great display by young hurlers

The 2008 Fermanagh second level two-day blitz for Year 8 and year 9 in the splendid Castle Park indoor arena in Lisnaskea proved to be a great advert for hurling at this level, with over 60 games of fast skilful hurling served up by the various second level schools of Fermanagh.

Each school brought along two teams.

The competition, now in its third year, was organised by hurling development manager, Fabian Burns and reflected a massive rise in skill levels and an even greater rise in numbers of schoolchildren taking part. The games were keenly contested and played in a great sporting manner throughout the two days.

First up were the Year 8s of St Comhghall's, St Joseph's, St Eugene's, St Mary's (Brollagh) and St Aidan's, with very little separating any of the teams in either section.

After nearly three hours of non-stop action, St Mary's emerged as section A winners and St Aidan's in section B, but only just as it took a count back of scores conceded to decide the winners.

Best for St Aidan's were - Eoin Mc Manus, Phillip Doogan, Daniel Leonard, Jordan Hill. St Eugene's best were - Dale Crudden, Conor Mohan, John Moane, Darren Melarkey. Impressive for St Comhghalls were - Sean Mullarkey, Anthony Brady, Martin Reilly, Ryan Leonard and, for St Josephs, C Mc Elroy, O Russell, P Murphy, J Maguire.

St Mary's Brollagh best were - Shane Mimna, Larry Mc Cafferty, Terence Mc Garrigle and Paul Ward.

Not to be outdone, the Year 9's served up another feast of hurling action on the second day of the competition with St Mary's (Brollagh) again taking the honours in section A, winning all their games in the process. However, section B had to be decided with a play off between St Joseph's and St Eugene's, with St Joseph's just edging the decider with a 'golden' goal.

Best for St Joseph's were - N Mc Manus, R Mc Nulty, S Magee, D Stewart, and for St Aidans, Aaaron Mc Goldrick Caolin Straphie.

St Eugene's were best served by - Shane Heaney, Martin Flanagan, while St Marys Brollagh best were - Christopher Ryder, Anthony Mimna, Caolan Keown, Michael Kelm, Jake Rochfort.

Hurling development manager, Fabian Burns, thanked the teachers for their support and the children, not only for their excellent sporting behaviour but, also for the high level of skills displayed.

He also complimented Liz Wilson, manager of the Castle Park Centre and her staff for the generous hospitality extended to everyone.
