Feis Fhearmanach

While there are recriminations at the lack of a St Patrick's Day parade in Enniskillen, the committee of Fermanagh Feis deserve plaudits for organising a well supported event that ran over six weeks.

For instance, there were over 1,000 entries in Verse speaking, 1,555 in Art and Design, and over 800 in Classical Music.

The committee, the venues and the entrants were all cross-community which in itself must secure it a bright future. The one major concern, arguably, is that the Feis has become too big for the small band of workers who run it.

There will be a meeting to review matters. The committee face two options - downsize or engage a full-time paid organiser.

Those keen on having a St Patrick's Day parade in Enniskillen, and it seems there are many, should take some comfort from the way the Fermanagh Feis has grown. To date, the adjudicators apart, it's been done voluntarily.

Should Fermanagh Council not take it on itself to organise the St Patrick's Day Parade? It needs a body such as the Council to drive it forward and then, it should follow that groups or individuals undertake to organise aspects, e.g. floats, music, etc.
