"I admit to some four or five occasions when certain things happened that shouldn't have happened. I apologised to her at the time", the jury heard Keith Burns tell the injured party and her parents during a secretly tape recorded meeting in an Enniskillen bar in September 2004.
The court heard this meeting was at the request of the injured party and during the meeting she accused Burns of indecently assaulting her over a seven year period.
During cross-examination by senior prosecutor, Philip Mateer, QC, the jury in the indecent assault trial of Keith Burns, at Dungannon Crown Court, were played the tape of this meeting in which it appears Burns is admitting to some serious wrongdoing against the young female athlete.
Burns was asked by Mr Mateer how, at the beginning of this conversation, it appeared from his answers he instantly knew the family were talking about massages, and how he could recall there were 'four or five'.
"The only thing I did to (the injured party) that could be construed as indecent assault was the massages",
Burns told the jury, although he said he didn't know why the athlete could have misinterpreted these as indecent assault.
The girl's mother is heard telling Burns: "It's been absolutely horrendous - you put our family through so, so much."
And, the Court heard the injured party say to Burns, 'You did this over such a long period of time in such a devious way'.
On the tape, the girl's mother said to Burns "there have been many dark days and dark nights in this recovery", to which the defendant is heard to respond 'I agree' and 'I understand that'.
Mr Mateer asked Burns what did he think the mother was talking about here, and how, did he think, the injured party could get over something that Burns said never happened?
When Burns is asked on the tape by the girl's mother if another athlete he was training is safe, he replied 'They are all safe. (name of injured party) was the only one, (name) was the only person".
Mr Mateer asked was this the defendant admitting that the injured party was the only one he indecently assaulted. The defendant denied this.
In a later extract, Burns is heard telling the injured party "I'm going to give you a reason."
He continued telling her, 'I was extremely fond of you', at which point the injured party is heard to say 'Oh, God'.
The mother then says to him 'This is what pedophiles do Keith, it's what they do'.
Burns told the court that he had been 'ambushed' at this meeting and accused of indecent assault and that he was in a very distressed and confused state, that he was panicking and just wanted to get out of this 'hostile' situation.
Mr Mateer asked the defendant why, if he was telling the truth, he didn't say at any point in the conversation it never happened, to which Burns replied:
'I don't remember - I might have done', referring to a number of parts of the tape when someone is inaudibly speaking in the background.
Mr Mateer put it to Burns that the reason he didn't say it never happened was because everything the injured party was accusing him of was true and because Burns couldn't lie to this family.
Burns said the situation was very hostile and he didn't want to make a scene in a public place or call this girl a liar in front of her parents.
Burns was also heard saying 'it has affected me' and that he 'despised himself'.
Burns told the jury that he had no ulterior sexual intentions when he carried out the body fat tests, and told the court the other incidents before the court were just made-up lies.
