Following research into the requirements of migrant workers in Fermanagh, Fermanagh College, as part of their strategy to address those needs, is now delivering Polish language and culture courses to school teachers in local schools.
The Erne Integrated College Enniskillen and St Comghall's College, Lisnaskea were among the first to take up the offer, and embark on a leading course in Polish. The staff from Erne Integrated have just completed their first 10-week course.
Staff from both schools see this as an important first step towards welcoming their foreign national children and their parents into the school community. Teachers have commented on how it has brought a smile to the faces of their Polish pupils when they greeted them in their languages. It is reassuring for the children and their parents that everything possible is being done in Fermanagh to address their needs at all stages in their educational experience, including as adults at Fermanagh College.
Joan Major, Fermanagh College Language co-ordinator comments "In addition to a wide range of other languages (French, German, Irish, Italian, Spanish), Fermanagh College now provides courses in Polish and Polish culture for local people and English for foreign nationals who are now living in this region. Fermanagh College also delivers customised training in the workplace whether that be in schools, offices or factories."
