Brenda McCann has gained a lot from Irish Traditional Music, but she has also given an awful lot back. Every Monday night Brenda tutors at the Bawnacre Centre. Her students range from 8 to 18 and the enthusiasm they are showing and the improvement they have made has been 'brilliant' according to Brenda.
"We prepare the students for exams in the summer but we have also been very successful in both the Ulster Fladh and the All Ireland Fladh, having medal winners at both competitions."
Brenda has had a busy year in her own right. Along with Mary McAleese she travelled to Cyprus and Malta. Part of the official Presidential party Brenda helped spread the Irish culture to these countries and played for both the President of Cyprus and the President of Malta.
"It was fantastic. A once in a lifetime experience," Brenda explains.
Now back at home Brenda, who plays both the fiddle and the piano, has been working with the traditional music group 'Hidden Fermanagh'.
The group recently played at the Enniskillen Festival and wooed crowds with their up beat brand of traditional music. Hidden Fermanagh currently have two CD's and a music book out which are all available from Easons in Enniskillen.
"The book is a really good point of reference for anyone wanting to know more about Irish traditional music. Both adults and children will get great benefit from the book," Brenda says.
In the new year Brenda is looking forward to recording a session live for radio with Hidden Fermanagh and is looking forward to the experience.
In the meantime Brenda can be found in the Bawnacre every Monday evening between 6:30 and 9:30. The classes are open to anyone with Brenda saying the more the merrier.
