One of the most famous names in basketball is the LA Lakers. The yellow and purple jerseys are instantly recognisable to all. In the '70s and '80s their duels with the Boston Celtics were legendary and with such marquee players as Kareem Abdul Jabarr and Magic Johnson, the Lakers were catapulted to a different level.
And now the famous Lakers name could be coming to Fermanagh. One of the few counties without a competitive basketball team, there are steps under way to rectify that and if successful, this could see the birth of the Fermanagh Lakers.
On August 23rd at 7.30pm, a meeting will be held at the Lisnaskea Castle Park Centre and anyone interested in basketball is invited to attend.
"Young and old, man woman and child. All are welcome to come along. We need not only players but also people to run and administer the club," Eamon Brennan explained to the 'Herald.'
Eamon is Chairman of Basketball Northern Ireland and he is determined to get a team up and running here.
"Fermanagh is the only county in Northern Ireland and I think Ireland that has not got a basketball team and I hope that that can be rectified. And what a great name for a basketball team - the Fermanagh Lakers. It is just perfect."
And it is not only natives of Fermanagh that Brennan wants to target.
"The best basketball players in Europe come from Eastern Europe so we will definitely be wanting to get a few from that part of the world interested."
Kevin McColgan, who is Chairman of the Western Board, is keen to get a Fermanagh team up and running in the league as soon as possible.
"I think there is definitely an interest there. I would hope there would be a Fermanagh team competing in the development league within the next year."
Whatever about living by Lough Erne and being called the Lakers, there is one huge advantage to playing basketball according to Brennan.
"Well, we play under a roof and given the weather in that lovely part of the country at least the players can always have a game."
